Back to basics....

My many remakings are remarkable in their own way. Each, to varying degrees, includes body, mind, and spirit. Each requires being proactive, rather than reactive.

Running always provides the necessary rubric. Running enables me to: regroup; renew; rework; reorganize; remember; and reenergize.

Running is not static; it requires constant movement. So too do I. Running is my restorative.

Letters project - personal and public historical significance

Today's letter is postmarked February 2, 1945  - 70 years ago exactly.

The weather is similar, with lots of snow.  However, Dad talks about a coal shortage, while today we will talk about the Patriots win in Super Bowl 49.

Dad mentions that he got paid $50.70, while today my Son will want to spend that amount on Amazon while he is home from school.

My Dad says that Gov. Dewey declared an emergency.  We will await word from Governor Raimondo on today's snowfall.

On Febauary 1, 1945, my Dad foresees the end of the war, "It doesn't look as though the war will last more than two months in Europe."  On the same day in 2015, my 94 year-old Mom told me she was bored and then enthusiastically answered yes when I asked if she wanted to play solitaire on the iPad.

Excerpts from today's letter include,

He told me that one of the fellows we were with overseas dropped in to see him the other day and told him that he was on a furlough for 30 days and had to return to our base in Italy.  Erickson the fellow you met in Florida and was with me in the tower overseas also came back on the same deal I can't say that I am not lucky….

We had about six more inches of snow last night and that brings the total to 115 inches for the year. We are practically snowbound here on the base and snow plows are in continuous operation.  To make things even worse (but not for us) here is the hardships the civilians must endure on account of the coal shortage.  An emergency has been declared by Gov. Dewey and the N.Y.  State Guard has been called out to take jobs shoveling snow etc.  All unnecessary business places have been closed such as theaters, barbershops, liquor stores, taverns and even most of the schools.   The town looks like a ghost town with everything closed and so few people in the streets.  It is a common sight to see people pulling a few bags of coal on sleds, that is, if they are able to get it. I hope the situation is not as bad in Boston….

I got paid today and received $50.70.  Would it be alright dear if I didn't send anything home now until I see how I make a out on the furlough.   But if you need any now dear let me know and I'll send it to you….

So Bobby Lockhart is out.  I suppose anyone can get out if day try hard enough.   Maybe I should try it sometime. But I think my turn will come in the not so distant future specially the way things look in your now in Europe.  It doesn't look as though the war will last more than two months in Europe. And after the end of the war quite a few overseas men will be let go….

Well dear I must say good-night for now and I'll tell you once again that you are a wonderful girl in the best wife anybody could ever want.  I love you darling have a big hug and kiss on me.  I’ll pay off in a couple of weeks.
